Can I Take Tweezers on a Plane?

Whether you're jetting off for business or a relaxing vacation, you'll want to look your best. TSA regulations can be intimidating, as breaking the rules can get you fines of up to $12,856 per violation or even arrest. Get familiar with the rules before you go, and you'll sail through security without developing worry lines.

It's perfectly fine to bring tweezers in your carry-on or checked baggage. If you prefer to shave your brow arches rather than tweezing, you can bring a disposable razor or eyebrow shaper. A bonus: You can bring your eyelash curler aboard, too.

Although you probably won't need to blow-dry your hair on the plane, it's perfectly fine to bring it aboard in your carry-on or pack it in your luggage. There's no restrictions on electric curling, straightening or crimping irons, so pack them in your carry-on or checked baggage as you wish. You can even bring one butane curling iron, provided the safety cover is over the heating element. Leave spare cartridges behind.

Use the 3-1-1 rule when packing your carry-on for any liquids, pastes, sprays or other non-solid toiletries like makeup and nail polish. You can bring up to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) of each item you need. Pack everything in one zipper-topped quart-sized plastic bag, and keep in mind everything has to fit in one bag. If you want to bring larger sizes of hairspray, shampoo or other toiletries, pack them in your checked baggage. Just be sure you don't exceed 70 ounces total.

Nail clippers, nail files and manicure scissors are okay to bring with you on the plane. Pack them in carry-on or checked baggage. If you opt to place them in your carry-on, make sure they have blades less than four inches from the fulcrum.

Leave razor blades for straight or safety razors out of your carry-on luggage. You can pack the blades securely wrapped in your checked baggage. The handles alone are fine to include in your carry-on without the blades.

Once you're through security, you can distribute things to your purse and carry-on as you need to. Most airlines allow one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a purse, shoulder bag or laptop case. But airlines including United and American Airlines restrict Basic Economy passengers to one personal item with no other carry-on. Be sure to check with your airline for any special carry-on rules.
